More Than Produce

When you hear “farmers market,” fresh fruits and vegetables may be the first things that come to mind—and they are an important part of what we do. But the Socorro Farmers Market is about more than produce.

Our market brings together growers, farmers and ranchers, bakers, food producers, makers, artisans, and other local vendors, giving our community the opportunity to shop directly from the people behind the products.

Depending on the season and vendor availability, you may find fresh produce, meat and eggs, breads and baked goods, prepared foods and beverages, plants and flowers, handmade soaps and body products, art, jewelry, textiles, woodworking, and other handmade goods.

Behind Every Market Table

What you see on market day is often the final step in hours, days, weeks, or even months of work.

Growers spend their time planting, tending, harvesting, and preparing what they bring to market. Farmers and ranchers care for their animals throughout the year. Bakers and food producers spend hours preparing, baking, cooking, packaging, and labeling their products.

Our artists and makers put their own time, skill, and creativity into the things they bring to market. A handmade item sitting on a vendor’s table may represent hours of work and years spent learning and developing their craft.

And market day itself takes work. Vendors pack everything, transport it to the market, set up their booths, spend the morning serving customers, and pack it all up again when the market closes.

Why Shopping Local Matters

When you purchase something at the Socorro Farmers Market, you’re supporting the people who grow it, raise it, bake it, cook it, make it, or create it.

You’re supporting local growers, producers, makers, families, and small businesses while getting the opportunity to know the people behind many of the products you purchase.

That’s one of the things that makes shopping at a farmers market different.

What You’ll Find at the Market

One of the things that makes shopping at a farmers market unique is that what you’ll find changes naturally throughout the year. Farmers and growers work with the seasons, weather, growing conditions, harvest times, and product availability all affect what is ready to bring to market.

Here in New Mexico, growing conditions can vary greatly from one area to another, and even things like a late frost, hailstorm, or extreme heat can affect a harvest. Some products are available for only a short time each year, while others may be available for a much longer season.
